Abstract

Outlines the eligibility criteria within the California Family Rights Act, before considering the rights to which eligible individuals are entitled. Suggests that employers must keep themselves informed regarding eligibility and what constitutes a serious health condition. Concludes that failure to do so could result in an employee seeking civil action with unlimited compensatory damages for emotional injury and punitive damages.

Abstract

Purpose

This study is an “Action-Research-based” bridge that connects sketching and photographic processes. The article’s objective encompasses designing, assessing and validating a perceived difference between sketching and photography through a structured task by ensuring the systematic creation and implementation of the assignments. This study is part of a larger research project exploring the differences between thinking about sketching and final photographic outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

This experimental mixed-method methodology was collected in three phases: the creation phase, where participants were asked to sketch and photograph a balanced composition; the evaluation phase, where the sketches and photographs were evaluated by “Self, Peer, and Independent” reviewers for their perceived differences. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was implemented to test the result. In the validation phase, eye-tracking technology is applied to understand the subconscious eye movements of individuals.

Findings

This study of 37 samples has helped develop a self-study model in photography, as students have learnt to evaluate themselves critically. This experience will help students be active and reflective learners, thus increasing attention and retention in their course, specifically “Photography Design Education”. A pedagogical approach by design instructors for practical, student-friendly, process-oriented assignments for their photography courses in higher education.

Originality/value

The trans-mediation process requires cognition amongst different mediums, such as pencil and paper for sketching and light for light painting. Photography courses in design education need knowledge of the photo/light medium, contrasting with the understanding of sketching/drawing. Exploring and addressing research gaps for transforming and designing assignments based on adaptive understanding presents an exciting opportunity.

Abstract

Purpose

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging is the most computational intensive algorithm and this makes its implementation challenging for real-time application. This paper aims to present the chirp-scaling algorithm (CSA) for real-time SAR applications, using advanced field programmable gate array (FPGA) processor.

Design/methodology/approach

A chirp signal is generated and compressed using range Doppler algorithm in MATAB for validation. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and multiplication operations with complex data types are the major units requiring heavy computation. Therefore, hardware acceleration is proposed and implemented on NEON-FPGA processor using NE10 and CEPHES library.

Findings

The heuristic analysis of the algorithm using timing analysis and resource usage is presented. It has been observed that FFT execution time is reduced by 61% by boosting the performance of the algorithm and speed of multiplication operation has been doubled because of the optimization.

Originality/value

Very few literatures have presented the FPGA-based SAR imaging implementation, where analysis of windowing technique was a major interest. This is a unique approach to implement the SAR CSA using a hybrid approach of hardware–software integration on Zynq FPGA. The timing analysis propagates that it is suitable to use this model for real-time SAR applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Understanding electricity use behaviour is considered one of the strategies to achieve sustained electricity management in buildings. The lack of understanding of occupants’ electricity use behaviour has been found to cause various environmental and ecological issues. This paper aims to investigate the factors influencing occupants’ inefficient use of electricity in buildings becomes a vital area of study to achieve maximum benefit in the area of electricity management.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a quantitative survey and questionnaire as instruments for gathering relevant information from end-users in the study area, and the data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Findings

The major factors influencing the electricity use behaviour of students in the study area were attributed to their level of awareness, personal beliefs and attitude towards electricity, managerial influences and economic factors.

Originality/value

The threats to the environment and ecology necessitate immediate attention to the elements that impact students’ electricity use habits. This research explains the key elements that might impact students’ electricity consumption habits in buildings. Understanding these key characteristics will provide policymakers with vital knowledge of its prevalence.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study is to explore different aspects of the Green Lean Six Sigma (GLSS) approach, application status and potential benefits from a comprehensive review of the literature and provide an avenue for future research work. This study also provides a conceptual framework for GLSS.

Design/methodology/approach

To do a systematic analysis of the literature, a systematic literature review methodology has been used in this research work. From the reputed databases, 140 articles were identified to explore hidden aspects of GLSS. Exploration of articles in different continents, year-wise, approach-wise and journal-wise was also done to find the execution status of GLSS.

Findings

This study depicts that GLSS implementation is increasing year by year, and it leads to considerable improvement in all dimensions of sustainability. Enablers, barriers, tools and potential benefits that foster the execution of GLSS in industrial organizations are also identified based on a systematic review of the literature.

Originality/value

The study’s uniqueness lies in that, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind that depicts the execution status of GLSS, and its different facets, explores different available frameworks and provides avenues for potential research in this area for potential researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to review the effect of usability factors on e-learning user relationships, namely, student–student interaction (SSI), student–instructor interaction (SII) and student–content interaction (SCI), in the existing e-learning literature. Further, this study intended to identify whether usability contributes to the satisfaction of e-learners.

Design/methodology/approach

This study has undertaken a systematic review using the PRISMA methodology to filter the literature in the domain of e-learning with respect to usability concerns using six databases. An analytical framework has been formulated to evaluate the literature against different dimensions of interactions and usability.

Findings

Results reveal that while SSI has grabbed 71.4 per cent research attention with respect to usability factors of e-learning systems, SCI has been given the least focus, i.e. 26.6 per cent. According to the results, e-learning systems’ usability issues influence the user relationships and affect the user satisfaction, which will lead to lack of user continuity.

Practical implications

The findings of this review will provide insights to instructional designers to construct more satisfied learning content for the users. The analysis framework of this study will encourage researchers to drive future research in e-learning along with the concern of usability.

Originality/value

This research emphasizes on the importance of SCI to focus future e-learning research on a different angle, in addition to SSI and SII. The analysis framework of this study will provide different dimensions, specifically for the empirical research in the domain of e-learning.
